Marina News July 2010
Oil Update –
We have had several days of no oil which has been great, unfortunately we now have oil on the beach and in the pass. What is now clear is that the oil will come and go until it is all cleaned up and as time goes by, though it may get worse before it gets better, it will get better. We still do not believe that any significant amounts of oil will ever get into Bayou Chico and despite the rumors no oil has made it in the Bayou yet. We will still be able to boat on the intercoastal and avoid any oil. The Blue Angles are on, the forth of July fireworks at the Beach will happen. We will just have to deal with oil coming and going for the summer.Oil Spill Mitigation for our customers –
We have devised a plan to add protection for boats in our marinas should some oil make it into Bayou Chico. At your request and at no charge to you we will deploy oil absorbent boom around your boat in its slip. The boom will stop any floating oil from getting on your boats waterline and damaging your paint. You will be able to open and close the boom to come and go as you need to. It is an added protection that may never be needed but if you would like boom around your boat simply call, e-mail, or return the enclosed form and we will take care of it. 455-4552 or Naybor@bellsouth.net It is considerably less expensive to leave your boat in its slip with protective boom around it then to put the boat up in the boat yard. If it’s in the water you can use it, if it’s in the yard your season is over.Island Cove Marina –
We have painted the channel buoys and replaced them with new ground tackle. The gate has been out of commission for a few days. We busted a sprocket and had to order the part. It should be back in working order any minute.Palm Harbor –
We are looking at a misting system for the awning. It connects to a hose and sends a fine mist down from the awning to keep you cool. If you run the hose threw a cooler of ice water it can reduce the temperature by 25 degrees. At least that’s what the sales info says. If it seems to work well we will put one on the back deck at Island Cove as well.Party Time –
The party was a great success and everyone seemed to have a good time. We estimate that we had about 250 folks attend and everyone enjoyed the music and food. Thank you to all that brought side dishes. We had a visit from Greg Evers who is now the republican candidate for State Senate in district 2. He was the one that sang with the band. Greg has been a great friend to boaters in Florida over the years as a State Representative and now he wants to go to Washington. I don’t know why anyone would like to go to Washington. He is a strawberry farmer and a down to earth great guy. Thank you all for coming and we greatly appreciate our customers.VIP Visits –
In addition to having a representative from our State Senate stop by our party and sing with the band, Alex Sink the States CFO was also here at Island Cove to meet with local businesses and listen to our local problems. Alex Sink is a Democrat running for Governor. Alex is serving her first term in the State Cabinet and owned and operated her own small business for years. Both Greg Evers and Alex Sink care deeply about the problems we are facing during this oil spill disaster and they are doing what they can to help. Notice how bipartisan we are, one republican and one democrat. We really aren’t political but like to mention friends that help the boaters.
